Hinesburg Historical Society
Minutes for August 28, 2008
Present: Jean Miner, Ann Thomas, Maggie Gordon, Peggy Cioffi, Jeanne Wilson, Aaron Kimball, John Roberts, Sue Roberts, Melody Miner, Suzanne Richard, Kim Coates, Kitty LaClair, Louise Roomet
Members met at the Town Hall, carpooling first to the Gilman Road cemetery, then to the McEuen Cemetery on Rte.116. At both locations Jean Miner pointed out gravesites, stones, and epitaphs of special interest and significance. When the bug juice wore off and the shaving cream ran out we headed back to the Town Hall to conclude the meeting.
There was a discussion of what should be on the next meeting’s agenda, and someone suggested a tour of the old schoolhouses. This was followed by a conversation about the location of each of the schoolhouses, which of them still exists, and what kind of shape they’re in. Jean also mentioned doing a tour of old houses in Hinesburg, and that Caroline Harvey was perhaps our last resource on who lived where.
It was suggested that the website be a topic for the next meeting’s agenda, as well as the Historical Society’s participation in the Hinesburg Fall Festival on September 26th and 27th. Mary Pellegrini is still planning the historical fashion show, but no one present had any additional clothing items to offer. Jeanne said that she would ask the Festival organizer if the downstairs meeting room in the Town Hall would be available; if so, then perhaps the Historical Society could use it for a display and outreach. It was suggested that the slideshow of digitally archived material that Ann put together for the One Day Museum might be as popular during the Fall Festival as it was during the Museum. Ann’s “Then and Now” book (kept in the library) was also mentioned as a display item, and Jean was asked if she could select a few items of interest from the materials she keeps in her home. Historical Society members could staff the room in shifts, answering questions and helping to promote the Historical Society.
The next meeting of the Hinesburg Historical Society is scheduled for Thursday, September 25th at 7pm in the Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Maggie Gordon (acting secretary)
