Jean Miner began by reading from the minutes of the first meeting of the Historical Society in 1987. She said that she was ready to pass the leadership of the HHS on to someone else, and at the same time hoped to increase the membership to include more young people. In addition, she hoped to find a more permanent and accessible home for the materials that she has collcted over the years that are now stored in her spare bedroom. |

Aaron and Gil briefly discussed the idea of incorporating the HHS in order to qualify as a non-profit. Gil shared his experience with the incorporation of the Monkton Historical Society. Aaron noted that this might me a goal for the HHS in the future. Ann talked about the digital archive that has been started as part of the One- Day Museum held the past two years in January. The goal is a virtual museum available to everyone online, with links from the town and school web sites. In addition to an archive of photos, the virtual museum would contain links to other sites, as well as a message board where townspeople could share their stories and help to answer questions. Although there is little on it yet, there is a web site www.hinesburghistoricalsociety.org. Jean began a discussion about finding a home for the materials that she has collected over the years. Sue asked about the old Carpenter Library building, which Jean said was not handicap accessible and had no parking. The building has also been sold. The HHS does have a few shelves at the library where binders of photos and other documents are stored, but the idea of requesting more space at the library was never pursued. Other suggestions proposed were the vestry (in poor condition), CVU, the grammar school (no free space), and the Town Hall (no free space). Ann talked about the work being done by the Ancient Roads Committee, which both she and Suzanne are members of. Ann brought in a binder containing the original proprietors’ map as well as other documents pertaining to the founding of Hinesburg in the 18th century. She also brought in the “Then and Now” binder of photos that began a lively discussion of town properties. Ann mentioned that both binders are available at the town library. Mary Pellegrino and Caitlin Van Sleet talked about a historical fashion show that they are organizing for the fall. The goal is to connect clothes with history, and younger with older. She has already found several young people who are interested in modeling, and is looking for vintage clothing owned by Hinesburg residents who could tell a story about the clothing during the fashion show. It was suggested that the date for the fashion show might be coordinated with the fall festival in Hinesburg. This might also provide an excellent opportunity to showcase HHS materials and mission. The overall plan discussed by attendees was to increase membership in the HHS preliminary to incorporation, rather than rush into it. It was decided that the Society would continue to meet on the 4th Thursday of each month, and the downstairs room in the Town Hall was reserved for the following dates: 7/24, 8/28, 9/25, 10/23, November and December TBA. At the July meeting, it was suggested that maybe the town documents vault might be opened to give members a tour and introduction to researching town documents. This is to be determined.
